Tropical Storm Dexter has developed in the Atlantic Ocean and is moving off to the east and northeast currently.

As of 5 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Dexter is located at 34.6 N and 68.3 W and is about 255 miles northwest of Bermuda. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving east-northeast at 12 mph. Dexter has a minimum central pressure of 1002 mb or 29.59 inches of mercury.

Dexter's only impacts to the East Coast will be rough surf over the next couple of days. It will move out to sea as a tropical storm and is not expected to be any impact to land.

This system isn’t the only one that the National Hurricane Center is highlighting. Another low pressure system may form in this one’s wake, also likely to zoom northeastward in the following days. Finally, a tropical disturbance in the central Atlantic is being watched for development, with a good chance that it will also be joining the ranks of the 2025 hurricane list.

Thus far, there have only been three named storms, although it is not unusual for the season to start slowly. The peak of the hurricane center is still about five weeks away, and the majority of tropical storms tend to be concentrated around that climatological peak.

Regardless of whether or not there is tropical development, this is the time to prepare for the hurricane season. Have a “go-bag” ready with chargers, water, food and other necessities. Also, take the time to scope out multiple evacuation routes, in case your preferred one is traffic-jammed or blocked.
