Severe Storms Target Southern Plains

Severe thunderstorms will develop across southeastern Colorado into the panhandle of Texas today potentially leading to travel delays.
Areas of showers and thunderstorms will blossom across parts of the southern Plains today due to an upper-level disturbance bringing the risk of heavy downpours, hail, damaging wind gusts and even an isolated tornado or two. Warm and humid air will aid in the development of these thunderstorms across this region of the country.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the panhandle of Texas including Amarillo, Texas.
The government's Storm Prediction Center has issued a Slight Risk for southeastern Colorado, southwestern Kansas, parts of western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas for today. This includes Springfield, Colo., Liberal, Kan., Guymon, Okla. and Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas. Main risk from thunderstorms will be damaging wind gusts of up to 60-70 mph and large hail, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.
The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
