Northern Tier of the U.S. Under Severe Threat

The northern Plains will see thunderstorms impact the region tonight. Damaging winds, large hail and even a few tornadoes will occur.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed both a Moderate and Enhanced Risk areas for these threats, with the cities of Bismarck and Fargo, N.D., along with Miles City, Mont., Duluth, Minn. and Superior, Wis. in these risk areas.
A Tornado Watch has been issued for central and eastern North Dakota, northeastern South Dakota and parts of northwestern Minnesota. This includes Jamestown and Grand Forks, N.D., Aberdeen, S.D. and Detroit Lakes, Minn.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for parts of northern Minnesota. This includes Duluth and International Falls, Minn.
As an area of low pressure comes off of the northern Rockies and strengthens, southerly winds at the surface will transport warm and humid northward across the Plains. Showers and thunderstorms will develop and keep going tonight allowing for severe weather to continue.
Make sure to know the difference between a watch and a warning should they become issued. A “watch” means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur and to be on alert for any rapidly changing conditions. A “warning” means that severe weather is imminent, and you should act fast to remain safe.
The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water, and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time. Also, check the WeatherBug app frequently for any updates on today's severe weather. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"
