Monday's Weather Outlook

The beginning of the first week of August will be very similar to its first weekend, at least in the weather department.

The biggest area of weather will be across the Southeast, where low pressure will produce stubborn showers and thunderstorms from Alabama to the Carolinas. Some of these storms could produce flooding across Georgia and northern Florida as rainfall totals measure to several inches.

A few thunderstorms could bleed along the edges of this weather system into the southern Plains and even as far north as the Ohio Valley. For these areas, Monday won’t be a washout, but the windshield wipers might be needed from time to time.

Another weak disturbance will march its way through the Canadian Prairies, bringing a few showers and thunderstorms from Montana to Minnesota. These short-lived storms could bring briefly heavy rain and a bit of hail.

Otherwise, high pressure will dominate the West, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Hazy skies will be typical across the Southwest from California’s wildfires, while Canadian fires will produce smoky conditions from Wisconsin to New England.

Temperatures will certainly feel like August for most of the country. Just a few spots in the Northwest will see highs in the lower 70s, while the rest of the Northwest, the Upper Mississippi Valley and northern New England will all see upper 70s. Eighties will be widespread from Oregon to the Great Basin and from the central Plains to the Eastern Seaboard. The upper 90s and 100s will be limited to the Southwest, while the hottest temperatures of the East – in the lower 90s - will be devoid of typical August humidity.
